Biography

Painting In The Here And Now

Meet Stephen Robert Ingram- SRI, even though everyone simply calls him Steve. He is an expressionist painter and graphic artist whose work is charged with colour, rhythm, and life. Whether painting en plein air, in nature or immersed in the studio, Steve is intoxicated by the thrill of mark-making- bringing blank canvases to life with vibrant, fluorescent, joyful, sombre, and sometimes moody tones. Each piece carries fragments of nature, memories, art school, fleeting observations, and lived experiences, distilled into art that celebrates the present moment.

For Steve, life and art are inseparable:
Art, cooking, gardening, writing, guitar, family, friendship, kindness (even when grumpy), joy, travel, and love of fellow humans all feed into his creative vision. His works are living testaments to a philosophy of travelling free, living in the moment, and sharing a vision.

As Rumi reminds us

Only From The Heart Can You Touch The Sky

Stephen Robert Ingram (SRI), known to most simply as Steve, is an expressionist painter and graphic artist based in the Blue Mountains, Australia. Born in England and travelling overland to Australia in the 1980s, his art is infused with a love of colour, texture, and the immediacy of painting in the moment.
Working both en plein air, with fellow artists and in the studio, Steve creates vibrant, moody, and dynamic canvases that draw on nature, memories, art school, global travels, sketchbooks kept since boyhood, and a lifelong immersion in music, food, and culture. His parents, one an oil painter and the other an architect and watercolour artist, instilled in him an appreciation of creativity as a way of life.
Inspired by artists from Rembrandt to Pollock, Matisse to Hockney, and countless contemporaries, Steve’s work is both homage and original expression. His paintings invite viewers into a world where freedom, resilience, and joy are celebrated through bold, living colour.

Personal Artist Statement — Stephen Robert Ingram (SRI)

I paint to capture the immediacy of life- its colours, moods, and fleeting moments. Working en plein air, with fellow artists and in my Blue Mountains studio, I explore the energy of mark-making and the transformation of canvas into something alive. My work draws on nature, memories, art school, travel, music, food, and culture, shaped by the artistic family of my oil painter Mum and architect Dad. Influenced by artists from Rembrandt to Pollock and beyond, I create expressionist works that celebrate freedom, resilience, and the joy of living in the moment.

I create vibrant, expressionist paintings inspired by travel, music, nature, and memory- works that celebrate freedom, colour, and the joy of living in the moment.
